I Tried EXTREME Stuntman Training!

In this article, I’ll share my experience of learning professional stunt work in just one day, covering everything from taking realistic hits to performing parkour moves. My journey demonstrates how seemingly complex stunt techniques can be broken down into learnable components, offering insights for anyone interested in understanding the mechanics behind movie fight scenes.

Working with a professional stuntman, I learned the essential techniques needed to create convincing action sequences while maintaining safety.

Watch my full transformation into a stuntman here:

Key Takeaways

  • Camera angles and reactions are crucial for making stunts look realistic
  • Proper landing technique is essential for safely executing falls
  • Most stunts require controlled coordination rather than actual force
  • Basic parkour skills are fundamental to stunt performance
  • Safety measures like crash mats are vital for training

Learning to Take Hits

The first lesson in stunt work focused on taking hits convincingly. The key isn’t in the actual impact, but in the performance and positioning. Camera angles play a vital role – what looks fake from one angle can appear devastating from another.

Punch Reactions

Learning to react to punches required complete commitment to the performance. The secret lies in the timing of the reaction and making it look as though actual contact was made, even when there wasn’t any.

Drop Kicks

Drop kicks presented a unique challenge, as they involve more physical contact than fake punches. The key was learning to control the fall while making the impact look more dramatic than it actually was.

Advanced Impact Techniques

Slam Techniques

Movie slams, like chokeslams, rely heavily on the person being slammed to create the illusion. Rather than actually being lifted, I learned to time my jump with the attacker’s movement.

Wall Impacts

Getting thrown into walls required specific techniques to maintain safety while creating dramatic effect. I learned several variations including Spartan kicks and tackle impacts.

Mastering Falls and Landings

Parkour Rolls

A fundamental skill for any stuntman is the ability to safely land from height. The parkour roll distributes impact across the body, preventing injury when landing from jumps.

High Falls

Learning to fall correctly involved making it look uncontrolled while maintaining complete body awareness. The key was to create dramatic flailing movements while preparing for a controlled landing.

Parkour Fundamentals

Basic Vaults

Three essential vaults were covered in my training:

  • Kong Vault – jumping over obstacles using hands as support
  • Speed Vault – the fastest way to clear obstacles in chase scenes
  • DB Dash – a stylistic vault focused on visual appeal

The combination of these fundamental movements creates the foundation for more complex stunt sequences seen in action films.

Creating a Fight Scene

After learning individual techniques, everything came together in creating an actual fight scene. This required combining all the learned skills – from taking hits to executing vaults – while maintaining proper spacing and timing with my scene partner.

Scene Composition

The final scene incorporated multiple elements:

  • Choreographed exchanges of hits
  • Dynamic movement using parkour techniques
  • Dramatic falls and impacts
  • Camera angle considerations

The experience demonstrated that while stunt work requires significant skill, the basic principles can be learned with proper instruction and practice. The key is understanding how to make movements look dramatic while maintaining control and safety throughout the performance.
